Prof. Dr. Frank Altemöller

Dr. jur. Frank Altemöller currently holds the position of a Research Fellow at the Institute of Customs and International Trade Law. At the same time, he belongs to a group of scholars that represents the ‘Visiting Faculty’ at the institute in conjunction with the University of Münster/Germany. He previously worked as a professor at the Harz University of Applied Sciences from 2010 to 2021, where he also headed the ‘European Administrative Management’ degree programme.

Frank Altemöller studied law in Berlin and Geneva. At the University of St. Gallen (HSG) in Switzerland, he completed a doctoral degree in law, taking an interdisciplinary approach to his studies, with a thesis on world trade and environmental protection. Frank Altemöller then worked for the Hamburg Fernhochschule HFH, where he developed distance learning programmes in the fields of German, European and International Economic Law.

His current research and work is focused on the World Trade System, the future of multilateralism and of Europe. Within this framework, he concentrates particularly on WTO-law, selected trade agreements and the European treaties, as well as their effects on the economy, public administration and society. He has also published work on the role of decision-making practice, arbitration and adjudication in international integration processes.

Frank Altemöller works with numerous organisations, such as the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe. He has developed educational programmes for the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and GIZ (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit). Frank Altemöller has also taught at the Otto Suhr Institute for Political Science, at the Institute for East European Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin and at the ‘EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht’ in Wiesbaden/Germany.

He holds visiting professorships and gives guest lectures at home and abroad, for example at various universities in China, the Russian Federation, the Middle East, the Caucasus, Africa and Latin America. His academic works have been translated into several different languages, including English, Mandarin, Russian and Polish.
